The city of Greensburg is part of the Pittsburgh Metro Area in Western Pennsylvania. Named after Nathanael Greene, a major general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, Greensburg has a population of 14,892 (according to the 2010 census).
Located 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Greensburg is a vibrant economic, academic, and cultural hub in Western Pennsylvania. The city’s population doubles during working hours, as many workers flock to the center, where their places of employment are located. In 2007, U.S. News & World Report ranked Greensburg as one of the “Best Places to Retire.”
After the end of the Revolutionary War, an inn was built along a wagon trail that stretched from Philadelphia west over the Appalachian Mountains to Fort Pitt, which is now the city of Pittsburgh. A small settlement known as Newtown grew around this inn that became the center of Greensburg’s Business District at the intersection of Pittsburgh and Main Streets.
Greensburg is a well-known cultural center in Western Pennsylvania. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, specializing in American Art circa 1750–1950, calls Greensburg home. The Palace Theatre, located at the core of the city’s emerging cultural district, is the venue for a variety of performances throughout the year. Additionally, the Palace Theatre is the home of the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, and the Summer Sounds Concert Series at the Robertshaw Amphitheater in St. Clair Park.
